One Year Later: Remembering Melissa and Mark Hortman

One year ago, Minnesota experienced a heartbreaking tragedy that deeply impacted communities across our state. We continue to remember Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, whose lives were taken in a senseless act of violence. As we reflect on this solemn anniversary, we also continue to keep Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, in our thoughts as they continue their recovery.

Melissa Hortman dedicated her life to public service, leadership, and improving the lives of Minnesotans. Alongside her husband Mark, she embodied a commitment to community, kindness, and service to others. Their loss is felt not only by their family and friends, but by people across Minnesota who benefited from their leadership and compassion.

Last year, Mayor Julie M. Maas-Kusske proclaimed June 18, 2025, as “Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman Remembrance Day” in the City of Maple Plain. That proclamation recognized Melissa’s remarkable legacy and her dedication to making Minnesota a better place for future generations.

Today, as we remember Melissa and Mark, we are reminded that the strength of our communities is found in how we care for one another. Their legacy challenges us to lead with empathy, treat one another with dignity and respect, and work together to build a more compassionate and connected community.

May the memory of Melissa and Mark Hortman continue to inspire us to live with courage, kindness, and purpose. Let us honor their lives not only through remembrance, but through our actions, by supporting our neighbors, strengthening our communities, and making the world a little better for someone else.
