Maple Plain Approves Resolution to Move Forward With Fire Department Consolidation with West Suburban District
At a joint meeting with the City of Independence, the Maple Plain City Council approved a resolution to move forward with the consolidation of the Maple Plain Fire Department (MPFD) into the West Suburban Fire District (WSFD).
Under the plan, the MPFD will officially dissolve on December 31, 2025. All current Maple Plain firefighters will be offered positions with WSFD, and the City of Maple Plain will lease its existing fire station to the district. The consolidation ensures continued high-quality fire protection services for residents while improving long-term efficiency and sustainability.
Both Maple Plain and Independence will share one-time transition costs and contribute to retirement obligations associated with the consolidation. City staff, working with legal counsel and the Maple Plain Fire Commission, will now finalize agreements so that the transition is fully implemented by year-end.
This decision represents a major step toward strengthening the regional fire service and providing a reliable emergency response for the community’s future.
