FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

City of Maple Plain Issues Precautionary Boil Water Advisory Following Water System Pressure Loss

MAPLE PLAIN, MN — July 11, 2026 — The City of Maple Plain has issued a Boil Water Advisory for all customers served by the City of Maple Plain water system, including residences east of Maple Plain that are connected to the municipal water system, following a temporary loss of system pressure caused by a communication failure between the City's water tower and water treatment plant.

Although water service and pressure have now been restored, a loss of pressure can increase the risk that contaminants may enter the drinking water distribution system. As a precautionary measure, residents should boil water before consuming it until water quality testing confirms the system is safe and the advisory is officially lifted.

What Residents Should Do
Residents should not drink tap water without first boiling it or using a safe alternative source such as bottled water.

To make water safe for consumption:
* Bring water to a full, rolling boil.
* Boil for at least one minute.
* Allow the water to cool before use.

Boiled or bottled water should be used for:
* Drinking
* Making ice
* Brushing teeth
* Food preparation and cooking

Boiling water kills bacteria and other disease-causing organisms that may be present in the water.
After the advisory has been lifted, consumers are encouraged to flush their building plumbing systems before resuming normal water use.

Potential Health Effects
Inadequately treated water may contain disease-causing organisms, including bacteria, viruses, and parasites. These organisms can cause symptoms such as:
* Nausea
* Stomach cramps
* Diarrhea
* Associated headaches
These symptoms are not caused only by organisms in drinking water. If symptoms persist, residents are encouraged to seek medical advice. Individuals with weakened immune systems, infants, older adults, and others at increased risk should consult their healthcare provider regarding drinking water safety.

What Happened?
On July 11, 2026, the City experienced a loss of pressure in its water distribution system due to a communication issue between the water tower and water treatment plant control systems. Because pressure was lost within the system, there is an increased possibility that contaminants could have entered the drinking water distribution network.
The affected area includes the entire City of Maple Plain water system, including homes east of Maple Plain that receive water service from the City.

What Is Being Done?
City staff and utility operators responded immediately to restore service and system pressure. Water flow and pressure have now been restored throughout the City, and the water tower is being replenished to normal operating levels.
Utility operators continue to closely monitor system operations and are providing regular status updates to the City Administrator. In addition, staff and technicians are reviewing and testing communication systems between the water tower and water treatment plant to ensure all primary and backup communication pathways are functioning correctly. Alarm notifications, backup controls, and other redundancy measures are also being verified to ensure the reliability and resilience of the water system moving forward.
Water samples have been collected for laboratory analysis and testing. The boil water advisory will remain in effect until testing confirms that the drinking water meets all applicable safety standards. The City expects water quality test results to be available by Sunday afternoon, July 12, 2026, and will promptly notify residents when the advisory can be lifted.
