As construction continues on the Industrial Street Improvement Project, residents in the surrounding area may notice temporary water discoloration, sometimes referred to as “brown water.”
Why does this happen?
During water main work, valve operations, and changes in water flow, naturally occurring minerals such as iron and manganese can become stirred up inside water pipes. This can temporarily discolor the water.
What does this mean?
• This is a common occurrence during infrastructure projects.
• The discoloration is temporary and is generally not a health concern.
• Water quality continues to be monitored throughout the project.
What you can do:
• Run cold water from a faucet, bathtub, or utility sink for several minutes until the water clears.
• Avoid doing laundry while water is discolored to help prevent staining.
• If discoloration continues, wait and try flushing again later as the system stabilizes.
City staff and contractors are actively flushing the water system and working to minimize disruptions during construction.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as these important infrastructure improvements are completed.
