Residents may notice increased activity around Maple Plain's outdoor warning sirens over the coming weeks as Hennepin County completes important maintenance and software upgrades to the emergency siren system.
The installation work and system updates are scheduled to occur between July 14 and August 7. During this time, technicians may be working at individual siren locations throughout the community.
What to Expect
Growl Testing
Following installation, each upgraded siren will undergo a series of 30-second "growl" tests. These brief tests allow technicians to calibrate the equipment and verify that each siren is operating correctly.
Some sirens may require multiple visits and additional testing if adjustments are needed. Residents may hear these short growl tests at various times during the installation period.
Monthly Siren Testing
As part of the upgrade process, Hennepin County will also conduct Phase Acceptance Testing during the regularly scheduled First Wednesday of the Month Outdoor Warning Siren Test. This testing is expected to continue from July through at least October.
The goal is for the upgraded sirens to operate seamlessly alongside the existing countywide monthly siren test. Most residents should notice little or no difference during these scheduled tests. However, because the new and existing systems will be operating together during the transition, there is a slight possibility that some upgraded sirens may sound at a different time or not activate during a monthly test while technicians verify system performance.
No Action Is Needed
These activities are part of a planned system modernization project designed to improve the reliability and performance of Hennepin County's outdoor warning siren network.
The City of Maple Plain appreciates residents' patience and understanding as these important upgrades are completed to help ensure the community's emergency notification system remains dependable and ready when needed.
